Danny McBride Is A Telly Evangelist In New HBO Comedy ‘The Righteous Gemstones’

— Updated on 30 July 2021

Danny McBride can do no wrong when it comes to a collaboration with HBO. After playing the unforgettable redneck baseball failure Kenny Powers in Eastbound And Down and teaming with Walton Goggins in cringe-worthy comedy Vice Principals, McBride is hoping to make it three out of three with new series The Righteous Gemstones.

Once again taking on writing and directing duties, McBride stars as preacher Jesse Gemstone, a member of the famous Evangelistic Gemstone family. John Goodman plays Eli Gemstone, the head of the family, while Adam Devine plays McBride’s brother Kelvin Gemstone.

Along with McBride, Goodman and Devine, the show features an all-star cast including Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz and Alan Williams, with Walton Goggins playing a fallen child star named Baby Billy who comes to the Gemstones to find salvation.

There’s not much in regards to plot, with HBO only revealing the show “follows a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work.”

The Righteous Gemstones is set to premiere on HBO this coming August.
