UPDATE: Keanu Reeves is rumoured to be attached to the role of Darth Revan. Whether this will be connected to this particular ‘Star Wars’ project is currently unclear.
Yes, I know. Like many of you, I grew weary of enduring Star Wars based cinema (their serialised properties, however, are doing just fine). And yes, I too was ready to throw in the towel… until the confirmation that a Knights of the Old Republic film was in the works. From the mouth of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy herself.
Based on the acclaimed video game and lore, the project is currently being penned by Laeta Kalogridis – the writing talent behind Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, more recently Alita: Battle Angel, in addition to having served as an executive producer for James Cameron’s Avatar. So we can breathe a little easier knowing Kalogridis is quite familiar with ambitious and spectacle-driven productions.
According to the latest reports, this has the “potential” to become an entirely new trilogy. Initially, many speculated whether Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were attached to direct this very trilogy. But as we know, those hopes have since been dashed with their abrupt exit last year in favour of a US$200 million Netflix deal.

The Knights of the Old Republic revolves around the war between the Sith and the Jedi at the height of both Force-sensitive factions. And set 4,000 years before A New Hope, it promises to be a rich exploration of the franchise history as well as some insanely full-scale lightsabre combat.
Suffice it to say, the Star Wars franchise has our attention for a little longer – but best not squander this s̶e̶c̶o̶n̶d̶ third chance.
