Unassumingly hidden within a weather-battered coastal forest of Vancouver Island, this 2,500-square-foot Tofino beach house is a glorious surfer’s retreat with the desire for utmost privacy at its heart.
Essentially one large open-plan glass box, the cantilevering pad ‘floats’ above the forest floor on stilts and is set back from the beach’s edge to offer an extra layer of privacy without the need for impeding the space’s panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows.
The main room is boxed in by two massive fireplaces at either end, each framed by their own feature artworks that overlook an elongated dining table that takes centre stage.
“The roof is held up only by the two chimneys on either side of the living space,” says design lead Jim Olson, “which gives the feeling of the roof floating. There are no columns or interior structural systems to obscure the panoramic view; instead, it feels almost like you are outdoors in a big open space with two cosy campfires at either end.”
