Amazon Prime Video is kicking off the year with an ambitious crossover which entails providing Richard Hammond (The Grand Tour) and Tory Belleci (Mythbusters) carte blanche on a remote island… sorta. With the open-ended objective of survival using any materials they can find by any means necessary, as you’ll see in the first trailer for The Great Escapists above, the upcoming series promises to be less about making it out alive and more about two grown men inhabiting their very own playground.
With an initial six-part release dropping later this month, the ad hoc creations teased so far range from basic shelter, high-powered fruit launcher, hydro-powered waterwheel, beach buggy, life raft, and even a functioning gyroscope – which the ever-lovable Hammond actually takes to the skies.
“Somebody needs to take hold of Popular Science as a genre and reinvent it for a new age,” says the former Top Gear host.
“And there are only two people to do that job… Unfortunately, neither of them are available so it’s me and Tory Belleci.”
“Working with Amazon, who have demonstrated their faith in us by commissioning this hugely ambitious show, we shall create something genuinely fresh and new on a scale of greatness never before seen. There’s every chance that both Tory and I shall make it back from the island alive and sane… Probably.”
The Great Escapists will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from January 29th.
