  • The Analogue 3D is compatible with every Nintendo 64 game.
  • This throwback console aims to faithfully replicate the feel of playing Nintendo 64 games on a CRT (but upscaled in 4K resolution).
  • Preorders officially open next week with first deliveries expected in early 2025.

If you’ve been feeling nostalgic for the Nintendo 64 but are struggling to hook the nearly 30-year-old console to your modern TV, your wish has just been granted. Analogue is set to release the latest entry in its line of modernised retro consoles — the Analogue 3D — which will let you play every Nintendo 64 game in glorious 4K resolution.

If you aren’t familiar with Analogue, it’s a gaming brand that’s dedicated to recapturing the nostalgic feeling of playing the classic consoles of the 1980s and 1990s with a quality-of-life boost to make them compatible with modern technology.

Announced earlier this year, the Analogue 3D joins the ranks of the brand’s previous throwback consoles for the NES, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, and the Game Boy. For the 3D, Analogue has designed the console with an original display mode to replicate the “warmth, depth, and texture” of a CRT upscaled in 4K.

The only twist is you’ll need to provide your own game cartridges. So if you aren’t already sitting on a decent collection that you’ve been towing around since primary school, be prepared to spend the big bucks on the resale market.

For what it’s worth, Nintendo does offer a few Nintendo 64 titles through its Switch Online service. While the library includes all the big names you’d expect — Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, etc. — there are only 32 titles available in total. That’s less than 10% of the Nintendo 64’s full library of 388 games and missing classics like Banjo-Tooie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and Super Smash Bros.

To be fair, the Nintendo 64 is a notorious hassle when it comes to proper emulation, which explains why some games have yet to make the jump to the NSO library. Since the Analogue 3D uses the original cartridge, you don’t have to worry about imperfect replication — you’ll be playing from the source.

The Analogue 3D doesn’t come with a controller, either, though it does offer Bluetooth support so you can pair one that you already own. If you want the authentic experience, the Analogue 3D also supports plugging your original Nintendo 64 controllers into its four ports.

However, if you want to go all-in, do note that Analogue has collaborated with 8BitDo to create a controller that replicates the feel of the Nintendo 64’s controller, albeit with a far more ergonomic design. The 8BitDo 64 Controller is priced at US$39.99 (AU$60).

The Analogue 3D is available in white or black and priced at just US$249.99 (AU$375). As alluded to earlier, preorders for the console and controller go live on October 21st at 8 AM PDT (October 22nd at 2 AM AEDT), with the console expected to launch during the first quarter of 2025 — find out more below.
