- Sony Picture has dropped the first trailer for Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s long-gestating reunion in 28 Years Later.
- The preview for the much-hyped zombie sequel supposedly hints at the fate of Cillian Murphy’s courier protagonist Jim.
- 28 Years Later release date: June 20th, 2025.
Tired as we may be of legacy sequels, given the quality of its first trailer, we’ll certainly make time for 28 Years Later.
As per the title, the film takes place 28 years (or 10,228 days) after the events of the post-apocalyptic horror franchise’s last instalment; and follows a group of survivors who must “face a world ravaged by hordes of the infected” now that the Rage Virus has returned.
Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes make up the cast.
On the subject of returns, original director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) has reunited with original scribe Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War). There’s also a rather telling cameo from original leading man and Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy.
Murphy has reportedly signed on to appear in the next sequel 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, which has been shot back-to-back with the forthcoming zombie flick; and directed by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, The Marvels). The scope of this particular story is currently unclear.
The real headline, however, was how Danny Boyle captured 28 Years Later: entirely on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. With the help of several specialised attachments, sure, but an impressive feat all the same. Especially considering the visual quality of the end product.
28 Years Later is scheduled for release on June 20th, 2025 — watch the first trailer above.
