These are just some of the more noteworthy descriptors A24’s Friendship has garnered since premiering at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. And if that doesn’t get you even slightly interested, perhaps the high-calibre comedic talent will.
The directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung centres upon a lonely suburban dad named Craig Waterman — portrayed by the hilarious Tim Robinson of Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave fame — who finds himself enamoured by his charismatic new neighbour Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd). But true to Robinson’s signature, this bromance soon gets out of hand, and his attempts to make an adult male friend “threaten to ruin both of their lives.”

“Look, we had a couple of really nice hangs, but I think it best if we go our separate ways. I don’t wish to continue this friendship,” Rudd’s Austin can be heard telling Robinson’s Craig in the trailer above.
To which the latter replies in a manic fashion: “You all accepted me way too fast. You can’t do that.”
Think of it as a cosmically uncomfortable run at Jim Carrey’s The Cable Guy meets, oh I don’t know… Black Swan? Or Fringe Guy: The Movie for all you Friday Beers devotees.
The stacked cast also features Kate Mara as Craig’s wife Tami Waterman; along with Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, Billy Bryk, Meredith Garretson, as well as another comedic heavyweight in Conner O’Malley. The screenplay has also been accomplished by DeYoung, with Raphael Margules and JD Lifshitz producing.
