Between The First Omen, The Substance, and Longlegs, 2024 has been an excellent year for horror film — but it looks like the upcoming Heretic could take the cake.
The film follows two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who, after visiting the quaint cottage of Mr Reed (Hugh Grant), have their faith tested by an elaborate underground labyrinth. The preview flashes a print depicting the Circles of Hell from Dante’s Inferno, which gives you a pretty clear indication of what’s to come… Welcome to Notting Hell.

Produced by A24, the Heretic trailer has hinted at an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but Grant’s villainous turn is the real draw here.
While he’s certainly played bad guys in the past, he’s never been this unsettling. We’re a long way from Paddington 2‘s Phoenix Buchanan. Though he still seems to be channelling some of his usual charming self, with an added edge of intense creepiness. This alone is worth the price of admission.

Heretic has been directed by the team of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also collaborated on the screenplay. The duo are no strangers to horror movies, having also penned the screenplays for A Quiet Place and The Boogeyman; and helming films like Nightlight and Haunt.
Outside of the genre, they’ve notably written and directed 65, the sci-fi film where a time-travelling Adam Driver fights dinosaurs.
Heretic hits Australian cinemas on November 28th, 2024 — you can watch the trailer above.
