Not to feel sorry for a $200 billion corporation or anything, but between floundering in the box office and the whole Jonathon Majors drama (which has effectively derailed an entire phase of releases), it hasn’t been easy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently. But a hard course correction may be on the horizon. At least based on the latest Deadpool 3 trailer.
The MCU’s inaugural R-rated flick appears to honour the promise that it won’t be sanitised in the wake of Disney acquiring 20th Century Studios. Fronted by perennially charming talent in Ryan Reynolds and Australia’s own Hugh Jackman — the latter of whom has unretired from his iconic role as Wolverine and trained for six months in preparation for his return — Marvel might actually have a shot at winning the people over again without reviving Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Deadpool 3 (officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine) plucks Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth from his not-so-ordinary life and plonks him into the Time Variance Authority (TVA): the multiversal agency previewed in the Loki series. There, he’s recruited to preserve the canonical timeline… which, as you can imagine, doesn’t exactly go to plan. What follows is a long-awaited (and bloody) team-up between two beloved characters; and a rather meta race against time to “save” the Marvel universe.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are joined by Emma Corrin as lead villain Cassandra Nova (twin sister of Charles Xavier), Morena Baccarin as Deadpool’s fiance Vanessa, Rob Delany as ordinary X-Force team member Peter, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Deadpool’s chauffeur Dopinder, and Succession alum Matthew Macfayden as TVA agent Paradox. You can also expect an entire litany of familiar faces to make a cameo appearance — though for the sake of preserving the surprise, we won’t get into it here.
Deadpool & Wolverine has been directed by Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Free Guy, The Adam Project), who has co-written the screenplay with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, as well as Reynolds himself. Australian release date: July 25th, 2024 — check out the new Easter Egg rich trailer above.
