After dropping a borderline X-rated preview that featured Ana de Armas working her sensual charms – among other things – on Ben Affleck (see: here), Deep Water now has a full-length trailer that promises to deliver more than just a string of steamy NSFW scenes. By all accounts, we’re in for a psychological thriller of substance akin to Affleck’s Gone Girl, and potentially even a career-best performance from the magnetic de Armas herself.
Based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, Deep Water depicts the story of an affluent married couple from New Orleans – Vic Van Allen (Ben Affleck) and Melinda Van Allen (Ana de Armas) – who’ve fallen out of love with one another. Yes, those are their actual names. No, I don’t think that’ll detract from the experience at all.
What follows is a series of deadly mind games and mutual provocations which escalates to result in the death of those within their radius. Specifically, those ensnared their extramarital affairs. There’s a joke somewhere here about the very definition of ’till death do us part.
The painfully attractive duo is joined by Tracy Letts as Lionel Washington, Rachel Blanchard as Maggie Connelly, Lil Rel Howery as Nash Hall, Fin Wittrock as Damon “Dom” Hart, Dash Mihok as Arthur Goggins, Kristen Connolly as Jackie Connelly, plus Australia’s own Jacob Elordi as Richard Chase. What’s even more exciting than the onscreen talent, however, are the figures lurking behind the scenes.

While you might not be familiar with the name Adrian Lyne, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered his erotic milestones in mainstream cinema such as 9½ Weeks led by Mickey Rourke and Kim Bassinger, Fatal Attraction featuring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, Indecent Proposal with Robert Redford, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson, as well as Flashdance featuring Jennifer Beale.
Deep Water will be the first film Lyne has directed since 2002’s Unfaithful starring Richard Gere and Diana Lane. The screenplay has been adapted by Euphoria creator and the man behind Netflix’s Malcolm & Marie Sam Levinson alongside Stranger Than Fiction scribe Zach Helm.
The film’s release has been delayed for well over a year now – to the point where we’ve actually witnessed the birth and death of Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck’s own real-life relationship. Initially, it was slated for a November 13th of 2020 premiere, before being pushed back to August 13th of 2021, and then January 14th of 2022. After (briefly) being scrapped from the release schedule altogether, it has now been committed to hitting Amazon Prime Video internationally and Hulu in the US next month.
Deep Water has a confirmed release date of March 18th, 2022 – check out the full teaser trailer above and the steamy preview below.
