Get your oxygen masks on, grab your wingman by the arm, and clear the runway. Top Gun 2 is now officially in production, with Tom Cruise himself dropping a teaser image on Twitter. The first visual of any kind the world has received regarding the long-awaited sequel.
Cruise confirmed that TG2 had received the greenlight roughly a year ago on morning television. And true to his word, we are now seeing all the pieces of the 80s nostalgia puzzle fall into place.

This second instalment will focus on the progression of Cruise’s “Maverick” who is now a flight instructor to next generation pilots. This will involve grappling with the issue of deceased co-pilot “Goose’s” son who has since chosen to walk/fly in his father’s footsteps. As a casting description summarises his character:
RIOT FKA WRIGLEY: Supporting Male (20-29) Goose’s son. All-American good looks. Rode a football scholarship to an Ivy League degree. He is in love with Sugar. He distrusts Maverick and dislikes what he stands for, although they have a lot of similarities. Eventually, comes to respect Maverick and uses his techniques. He is forced to eject in enemy territory and Maverick comes to save him.
“Aviators are back, the need for speed,” says Cruise.
“We’re going to have big, fast machines,” he adds, referring to both fighter jets and drones.
“It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one… but a progression for Maverick.”
This film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) who is no stranger to classic film revival. In terms of the script, it has been penned by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) and Peter Craig (The Hunger Games).
The film is set to release on June 12th 2019, and we can’t fucking wait.
