Hollywood has been copping some criticism of late for hauling dead/completed properties out from their final resting places, schmearing it with superficial nostalgia icing, all to justify milking a few extra dollars.

But let me go on the record to say what I’m about to detail may not be your usual case of deep-dive, revive, and drive operation. Yes – based on what’s being shown in the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, we just might be in for a legitimate cinematic treat.

This third instalment of the original Ghostbusters canon will follow two children and their single mother who move to a small Oklahoma town post-eviction. All that’s left in their name is a property inherited by a mysterious and suspiciously unnamed grandfather.

As the trailer later reveals, this family can trace their lineage to an integral character from the original Ghostbuster films. And the discovery of their mysterious grandfather’s legacy all culminates as ghosts make their return to this plane of existence – something that has since become a long-forgotten myth of the past to the wider public.

The film will star Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and to complement a much-adored franchise with a much-adored human being, Paul Rudd. Bill Murray has also been confirmed to make a return, in addition to other original actors such as Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and even Sigourney Weaver.

Sitting in the director’s seat is none other than the son of the man responsible for the original Ghostbusters, the Academy Award-nominated Jason Reitman. The OG Ivan Reitman will serve as a producer to the production.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is scheduled for wider theatrical release on July 10 of 2020.
