Monster mayhem, an atrocious original soundtrack, and a CGI free-for-all are on full display in the newly released Godzilla vs Kong trailer for the upcoming HBO Max film. Although for all it’s clichés, the showdown film still looks like a wildly fun ride as two legendary cinematic apex creatures go head-to-head, with the inevitable group of humans stuck in the crossfire.

While various other titans from the cinematic MonsterVerse are here as well, the trailer rightfully focuses on the epic battle between Kong, who looks the be the protagonist here, and the scaly radioactive beast known best as Godzilla (Gojira). The film is part of the same universe that was started with 2014’s Bryan Cranston-starring Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island – both entertaining films – as well as the more recent Godzilla: King of the Monsters – a not-so-entertaining film. And it will be released as part of in late March as part of the ‘hybrid’ release schedule by Warner Bros. and HBO Max.

Notably, this release schedule will see the film hit both US cinemas in a limited capacity, and the HBO Max streaming service. It’s not yet clear whether Australians will be impacted by this controversial release schedule, but at the very least we should be able to stream it where HBO Max films are delivered down under – typically Foxtel Now and Binge. We do know, at least, that it is coming to select cinemas across the country on March 25th.

The hybrid release schedule was inked last year and is being led by the Denzel Washington, Rami Malik and Jared Leto crime thriller The Little Things. Now with the first full trailer, it appears Godzilla vs Kong is next on the list, which also includes Space Jam: A New Legacy, Dune and The Matrix 4.

In the Godzilla vs Kong trailer it’s implied that Godzilla, allegedly the film’s villain, may be controlled by outside forces as the aggressor of these epic, city-destroying battles. On team human, Friday Night Lights’ star, and best TV dad, Kyle Chandler stars as Mark Russell while Millie Bobby Brown plays his daughter, Madison. Also on the cast is True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard, Julian Dennison, and Eiza Gonzalez.

Interestingly, the film will also introduce various other titans who will get involved throughout the showdowns, including the snake-like Nozuki and the winged Warbat, both whom seem to be targeting Kong. These are notable creatures from the historic Toho monster universe, so it won’t be a surprise to see even more flood into the cinematic universe at some point – assuming this one is as passably successful as the previous films.

Godzilla vs Kong will be released in Australian cinemas on 25th March 2021, you can watch the trailer above.
