If you’re going to derail a television franchise beloved by millions like Yellowstone for a movie, then you better hope that movie is worth all the goddamn drama/heartache/sniping between actor and series creator. And based on the first full-length trailer for Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga, it looks mighty promising.

Originally pitched as a mammoth four-part, 11-hour Western epic, in addition to taking the lead, this forthcoming two-part cinematic event has also been written (alongside Jon Baird), produced, and directed by the Academy Award-winning Costner.

In fact, court filings from his extremely public divorce proceedings indicate that Mr Costner has invested at least $20 million into this passion project. Throw in the fact that he’s effectively walked away from a steady income stream and the hefty child support he’ll be obligated to pay, and you can begin to understand how much is riding on this.

Horizon: An America Saga chronicles a “multi-faceted” 15-year span of both the pre and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Think more Y: 1883 and less Yellowstone itself.

“It’s a beautiful story; it’s a hard story,” Kevin Costner previously explained.

“It involves women trying to get by in a world that was impossibly tough. They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men.”

He added: “They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious, that that wasn’t easy, and how vulnerable people were.”

As for the cast, although it’s by no means Oppenheimer or Barbie-level stacked, it does feature a respectable who’s who of screen talent:

  • Sienna Miller
  • Sam Worthington
  • Jena Malone
  • Abbey Lee
  • Michael Rooker
  • Danny Huston
  • Giovanni Ribisi
  • Luke Wilson
  • Isabelle Fuhrman
  • Jeff Fahey
  • Will Patton
  • Tatanka Means
  • Thomas Haden Church
  • Michael Angarano
  • Owen Crow Shoe
  • Ella Hunt
  • Jamie Campbell Bower

Horizon: An America Saga gallops into cinemas on June 28th, 2024 (Chapter One) and August 16th, 2024 (Chapter Two) against stiff competition… Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning (Part II) and the long-awaited Borderlands adaptation starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.
