Cards on the table. We had our doubts about Joker 2 (officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux) in light of the reports it was essentially a $200 million “jukebox musical” — but that was all before we’d glanced the trailer. I guess we really should have believed the reassurances of director Todd Phillips.

“Music is an essential element. It doesn’t veer too far from the first film,” he’d said of his hotly-anticipated sequel.

From the introduction of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn to the perfectly composed final frame of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck (the titular Clown Prince of Crime), the footage previewed today is a promising sign of another billion-dollar R-rated hit for Warner Bros.

While an official synopsis has yet to be confirmed, considering the trailer, canonical lore surrounding the Joker and Harley Quinn, as well as the title itself — which references a psychiatric syndrome involving the delusional state shared by two people — I think we all know where this is going. A classic love story of insane boy meets equally insane psychiatrist… who wreak havoc all across Gotham City.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are (re)joined by Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, and Harry Lawtey; with Leigh Gill and Sharon Washington having reprised their roles as Gary and Arthur’s social worker.

The screenplay has once again been penned by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips, the latter of whom is also back to helm the film.

As for a release date, Joker 2 (officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux) is scheduled to premiere here in Australia on October 3rd, 2024 — watch the trailer above.
