I’ll be honest, when I saw the trailer for Get Out at the cinema a few months back, I didn’t think much of it. In fact, when my mate asked me if I saw any good trailers later that night, I’d completely forgotten that I’d even seen it at all.
So when the reviews started coming in, everyone who’d done the same as I had and looked right past it, were soon glued to their screens bewildered by the ratings and reviews they were seeing.
Jordan Peele, one half of the viral YouTube duo Key & Peele, has made his directional debut in an amazing fashion, achieving an astounding 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 177 reviews so far. In addition, out of 33 703 user ratings at the time of writing, 89% of the audience liked it.
The film follows Chris Washington, an African-American photographer that accompanies his white girlfriend to her home estate to meet the family. Needless to say, he finds out that it’s not what it seems and he’s quickly up shit creek.
For a film that had a $4.5 million dollar budget, it’s $96 million USD worldwide grossing so far proves it’s not only critically successful, but financially too. The studio will be stoked with this one.
Get Out is released in Australian cinemas May 4.
