The internet was practically sent into a meltdown at the announcement of The Matrix 4 being greenlit earlier last year. And now, production for the long-awaited followup has officially kicked off in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
Both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss make their return as Neo and Trinity. But by the looks of the first images, you wouldn’t really be able to tell it was a Matrix production at all unless explicitly told otherwise. Though who knows… maybe the Chosen One now clocks in at his maximum ability wearing jeans, a beanie, and satchel.
Original writer/director, Lana Wachowski, is also set to make a return behind the camera. Hopefully to preserve the mythology of it all that proved a hit to the world during its initial cinematic run (at least with the first instalment).

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” says Toby Emmerich, chairman of the Warner Bros. Picture Group.
“Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”
Joining Reeves and Moss are a sprinkling of fresh faces. Faces that you will have definitely heard of including Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Max Riemelt, and more.
Unfortunately, once face we will not be seeing is Hugo Weaving as key antagonist, Agent Smith due to scheduling conflict. Nor is there currently any word on whether Lawrence Fishburne will make an appearance as Morpheus.
The Matrix 4 is slated for international release on May 21st of 2021.
