  • Mickey 17 is the first feature-length project from Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon-ho since 2019’s Parasite.
  • Starring Robert Pattinson, who is joined by Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, & Robert Pattinson.
  • Mickey 17 release date: January 30th, 2025.

We’ve finally received a trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s long-awaited follow-up to Parasite, and things are looking delightfully weird. Written and directed by the South Korean auteur, Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, alongside Robert Pattinson… and Robert Pattinson.

Set sometime in the future, a down-on-his-luck Mickey (Pattinson) signs up for an off-world job as an “expendable,” but neglects to read the fine print. Sent on dangerous scouting missions to help colonise extra-terrestrial planets, when he inevitably dies, the company 3D prints a new version of him with his memories intact.

When the 17th iteration of Mickey somehow survives a mission, he encounters one of his replacement clones, Mickey 18, and is forced to reckon with himself. And his role as an “expendable.”

Judging by the trailer, Mickey 17 seems to be leaning more towards the Academy Award-winning director’s stranger genre films, like Snowpiercer and Okja, rather than the contemporary dramas like Memories of a Murder and Parasite.

While it looks like Bong Joon-ho is taking a much bigger scope in this production than his previous film, he still seems to be exploring the themes of social inequality and class that have recurred throughout his career. Ultimately, it’s a film about the importance of reading the Ts and Cs.

The Mickey 17 trailer has also treated us to a preview of Robert Pattinson’s performance, who seemed pretty enthusiastic about doing another weird voice. It’ll sit nicely alongside the freak accents he’s previously used in films such as The Boy and The Heron, The Devil All The Time, and his underrated magnum opus, Robert Pattinson Desperately Needs a New York City Hot Dog.

The film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, and Pattinson is joined by a pretty impressive cast which includes Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Between them, the leading man, and Joon-ho, it’s a pretty hard-to-miss combination of talent.

Mickey 17 was initially scheduled to be released back in March but has since been pushed back due to post-production delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Mickey 17 will now land in Australian cinemas on January 30th, 2025 — watch the trailer for it above.
