  • Tom Cruise appears to be pretty hellbent on going out with a bang in the latest Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailer.
  • The man hailed as the “last real movie star” reprises his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, and reunites with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, for what could be the franchise closer.
  • Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning release date (Australia): May 17th, 2025

It seemed like just yesterday the world was introduced to Tom Cruise as the relentless IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Now, a little under 30 years and seven high-stakes chapters later, the franchise is poised to close the book with the explosive Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning led by its 62-year-old star (and LA Olympics mascot).

Following the previous cliffhanger instalment subtitled Dead Reckoning, which pitted Cruise’s Ethan Hunt & Co against a rogue AI threat dubbed the Entity, the disavowed heroes return to finish the job. And as expected, this globetrotting affair won’t be doing anything by halves: the production budget was last reported at $400 million, making it the fourth most expensive film ever made (not accounting for inflation).

Like the first Final Reckoning trailer, the footage provided today not only pays homage to the set piece stunts that have come to define the Mission: Impossible mythology, but also previews the latest showstopper we previously glimpsed – Tom Cruise casually dangling from a biplane as it weaves through the peaks of South Africa; along with a death-defying underwater sequence that’s been plastered across several headlines.

And true to his onscreen reputation, there’s a gratuitous amount of sprinting sequences.

The key difference this time around, however, involves the dimensions of the story. Ethan Hunt can be seen strapping into some sort of techno chamber to download an ungodly amount of information a la Chuck, likely as preparation for the battle ahead. Could this be his way of leveraging the Entity to outmanoeuvre the enemies of the state(s)?

In addition to Tom Cruise’s reprisal of his role as Ethan Hunt, The Final Reckoning will rewelcome Henry Czerny as former former IMF director Eugene Kittridge; Hayley Atwell as thief turned IMF trainee Grace; Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg as support agents Luther Stickell and Benji Dunn; Pom Klementieff as assassin-turned-IMF ally Paris; plus Vanessa Kirby as black market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis (“The White Widow”).

You can also expect Angela Bassett as CIA director turned US President Erika Sloane; Esai Morales as the villainous Gabriel; alongside Apple TV+ stars Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Tramell Tillman (Severance), Katy O’Brian, and Nick Offerman as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff simply named Sydney.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been written and directed by serial Cruise collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, marking his fourth entry into the franchise. As for a release date, it’s now hitting Australia a week earlier than previously intended on May 17th, 2025.
