Narcos is one of Netflix’s most successful series to date. Depicting the exploits of Pablo Escobar and the evolution of the Colombian drug trade, the popularity of the series so far meant a sequel was inevitable. Enter Narcos: Mexico, a spin-off series that focuses on the inception of the Mexican drug trade.
The first season documented the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 80s and how their ruthless leader, Miguel Gallardo, united the warring factions to create a drug empire. All the while he found himself being relentlessly hunted by DEA agent, Kiki Cameron.
With the announcement of season two set for 2020, we scoured the internet to gather every piece of information we could about the second season of Narcos: Mexico. Here’s everything we know so far.
February release date
It’s official, Narcos: Mexico season two is slated for release on February 13th of 2020. Netflix confirmed this with a teaser clip featuring Miguel Gallardo (Diego Luna) slowly turning to face the camera and telling the audience, “Everybody’s hungry for something. If you flinch, even the toughest beast ends up in a cage.” Interestingly enough, his glasses show the reflection of a tiger, hinting that things might not go well for the violent drug dealer.

The war on drugs is central to the plot
Details are still fairly scarce regarding the plot, but what we do know is DEA agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy), who narrated the first season and appeared briefly at the end of the final episode, will play an integral role. It’s believed his character is trying to uncover the truth about what happened to deceased agent Cameron.
With the Gallardo Cartel being almost untouchable thanks to their political influence, as well as their ability to buy off the local police force and military, the DEA decided to take a different tactic – sending in undercover agents to take down the main players by any means necessary.
The official synopsis says Narcos Mexico season two chronicles:
“The missteps, ill-conceived agendas, and corruption on both sides of the border that have led to a dangerous present in the failed war on drugs. It’s the mid-1980s, as Félix Gallardo’s super cartel splinters under its own dark weight and social and political shifts within Mexico prompt its desperate government’s most brazen corruption. Meanwhile, the American effort to exact revenge for Kiki Camerana’s execution leads them further away from any hope for justice. The cycle of violence rages on.”
So we can expect lots of violence and double-crossing in what could be the most bloody season of Narcos yet.
El Chapo will play a larger role
A minor character in season one, El Chapo is expected to have a larger role in the second series. If the show continues to take inspiration from the real-life exploits of the Cartel, then it will no doubt document Gallardo’s imprisonment, which proved a major turning point in the drug trade. With Gallardo imprisoned, El Chapo struck out on his own and founded his own organisation, quickly becoming one of the biggest Mexican drug lords of all time until his capture in 2016.
A colourful new cast
While the likes of Diego Luna (Miguel Gallardo), Isabella Bautista (Teresa Ruiz), and Alejandro Edda (JoaquÃn ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán) are returning, the majority of the cast in season two are fresh faces.
We already know McNairy will play a major role as DEA agent Walt Breslin, but there’s little info on the character Ossie Mejia, played by newcomer Jero Medina. Mejia appears to feature all season and could be a rival to Gallardo or possibly an undercover agent for the DEA. All will be revealed come February 13th of 2020.
