While he’s beloved for goofy comedies, from Punch-Drunk Love to Uncut Gems and Hustle, Adam Sandler shines brightest in dramatic roles. And his latest collaboration with Netflix, an earnest sci-fi flick dubbed Spaceman, promises to be another promising entry into the Sandman’s diverse filmography.
Based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, this forthcoming film has been directed by none other than Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, Vikings, Chernobyl), and casts Sandler in the role of Jakub Procházka.

Jakub is an astronaut sent to the galaxy’s edge where he’s tasked with collecting mysterious ancient dust. But not even our titular spaceman is immune to all the earthly dilemmas of marriage problems with his pregnant wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), despite being millions of miles away from actual Earth.
As his life back home falls to pieces in real-time, he turns to the only voice who can help him attempt to put it back together: an extra-terrestrial, spider-like creature from the beginning of time who lurks in the shadows named Hanuš (Paul Dano).
“I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,” Johan Renck told Netflix (via Tudum).

“I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.”
Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, and Paul Dano are joined onscreen by Kunal Nayyar as space technician Peter, Isabella Rossellini as Jakub’s commanding officer Commissioner Tuma, along with Lena Olin. The story has been adapted by Colby Day (I Don’t Want To Kill Myself, Happy Vacation).
Spaceman is scheduled to have its world premiere as part of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival’s Berlinale Special programme before hitting Netflix on March 1st, 2024 — check out the full-length trailer above.
