Revenge tales are by no means new, nor do they offer a whole lot innovation these days. But when executed correctly, its pretty damn hard to fault the entertainment value. As for the case of the upcoming Danish black-comedy/action flick Riders of Justice (original: Retfærdighedens Ryttere) starring the captivating Mads Mikkelsen, judging by the first trailer, we’re in for something that falls somewhere between John Wick and Shaun of the Dead.
Mikkelsen takes on the role of a father and husband who returns from military deployment after his wife has died in what appears to be a tragic train accident. It’s only when a man named Otto (portrayed by Nikolaj Lie Kaas) approaches him that he learns the freak occurrence wasn’t at all what it seemed.

Designed as a means of concealing the assassination of someone else on the train – a key witness who threatened to provide damning evidence against the Riders of Justice motorbike gang – the train accident is revealed to be entirely orchestrated without any regard for the collateral damage. Soon after, Mikkelsen leads a rag-tag group of civilians with their own respective expertise and makes it his mission to exact vengeance.
The film has been written and directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, who reunites with Mikkelsen for the first time since Men & Chicken. While it already screened in Europe last November, it’s only hitting everywhere else now-ish from May 21st.
