The sci-fi genre has truly reached yet another golden age in recent times. With the revival of Star Wars, the revival of Aliens, the revival of Blade Runner (good hustle Ridley Scott), not to mention Arrival- now comes Annihilation.
To summarise, when a biologist’s husband goes missing, she volunteers herself for an expedition into a mysterious “environmental disaster zone”. What follows, as we can gather from the trailer, is a desperate fight for survival against an unknown hostile force. This blends the usual tropes of horror/survival sci-fi in the forefront of a surreal backdrop, with a promise of a fresh spin based on the creative talents behind the scenes.
Annihilation owes it’s adaptation to Alex Garland, the writer/director genius behind Deus Ex Machina, yet another modern masterpiece of cinema that extends beyond sci-fi. It stars Natalie Portman as the lead, joined by the likes of veteran Garland collaborator, Oscar Isaac, Gina Rodriguez, Benedict Wong, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The film is set to be released on February 23rd 2018, and should be one to look out for.
