Sony Pictures has today released the first official trailer for The Equalizer 3 starring Denzel Washington with Antoine Fuqua in the director’s chair. This follows yesterday’s surprise release of the movie’s teaser poster, previewing the film off the back of its first official screening for exhibitors at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
With Washington apparently ready to retire from the role of Robert McCall, the man is out for blood one last time as he re-teams with Fuqua for The Equalizer 3. Arriving five years after the last outing for this vigilante action franchise, McCall is evidently back on his bullsh*t as you can see from the first full Red Band trailer above, this time taking his brand of unofficial justice to the Amalfi Coast of all places.
The official synopsis, included below, implies we’ll be seeing a different side of McCall as he struggles to reconcile the things he has done with the man he is now. That doesn’t mean the highly capable ex-Government assassin will be any less violent, however, as he takes on some local crime bosses in order to protect his mates. After all, we do see McCall poking people’s eyes out with gun barrels and routinely breaking people’s hands as per usual with The Equalizer 3 trailer looking gloriously gory.
Fuqua is back in the director’s chair, fresh from his Oscar-winning drama Emancipation, once again working alongside screenwriter Richard Wenk who returns to the franchise after penning the first two films. Supporting Washington will be David Denman (The Replacements), Gaia Scodellaro (That Dirty Black Bag), Sonia Ben Ammar (Scream), Remo Girone (Ford vs Ferrari), Andrea Dodero (Thou Shalt Not Hate), Eugenio Mastrandrea (From Scratch), as well as his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning (Wars of the Worlds).
Yet the one thing that really matters is what makes The Equalizer such a compelling franchise in the first place, aligning with the likes of John Wick (and to a lesser extent, Nobody) with the absolute purge of watching a highly capable, relentlessly protective bloke turn arrogant bullies into absolute dust.
Officially, The Equalizer 3 synopsis reads:
“Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.”
The official title for the project is The Equalizer 3: The Final Chapter, which doesn’t leave much to the imagination when it comes to posturing The Equalizer 4. However, with spin-offs and prequels increasingly popular in Hollywood, seeing Washington resurrect his role as Robert McCall is always going to be a possibility in the future.
“Justice knows no borders. Denzel Washington is back as Robert McCall in the final chapter of The Equalizer. #TheEqualizer3, Only in cinemas September 1,” tweeted Sony Pictures ahead of the trailer release.
