Whatever weekend tales you have about the simple pursuit of getting sideways with your mates will surely pale in comparison to Apple Studios’ adaptation of The Greatest Beer Run Ever:Â A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, & War written by Chick Donahue and Joanna Molloy.
Starring Zac Efron, Russell Crowe, and Bill Murray, the forthcoming film based on a wildly true story has been helmed by director Peter Farrelly – who has the unique ability to execute both feelgood biographical flicks (i.e. Green Book) and the odd goofy (i.e. Dumb & Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal).

So what qualifies this lesser-known chapter of history to be known as the “greatest beer run ever”? In 1967, Chick Donohue – who was a 26-year-old US Marine Corp veteran – left New York on a mission to bring his childhood friends some beer. The only issue was said childhood friends were serving smack-bang in the middle of a war zone: Vietnam.
Armed with nothing but a backpack full of frosty ones and a burning commitment in his heart, Donohue managed to hitch a ride on a merchant military ship, carrying the brews all through the jungle to track down his mates for a few sharpeners (spoilers?).

According to Deadline, the bloke was dressed in nothing but shorts and Hawaiian shirts, which led to him being mistaken for the CIA. Surprisingly enough, this made the entire journey a little easier. The legendary-tier shenanigans would eventually be punctuated by the Tet Offensive.
Peter Farrelly has reunited with the writing team behind Green Book, Brian Hayes Currie and Pete Jones, to give The Greatest Beer Run Ever:Â A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, & War the big-screen treatment. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Andrew Muscato, and Jake Myers have produced this future bromance classic.
The Greatest Beer Run Ever is scheduled to premiere globally via Apple TV+ on September 30th (on a Friday, no less) — check out the first trailer above.
