Universal has kicked off its campaign for next year’s Most Unnecessary Movie award nice and early with an adaptation of the bestselling self-help book – The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck – and based on the first trailer, it looks as annoying as it sounds. If not more so.
Directed by Nathan Price (The Insiders Guide To Love) and starring the book’s author slash American blogger Mark Manson, the forthcoming documentary hybrid will obviously communicate the exact same “unvarnished truths” featured in the original source material, only in a splashy visual medium that’s clearly trying to emulate Adam Mackay’s The Big Short. Only in a less effective manner.

“You’re going to die one day. I just wanted to remind you,” Mark Manson says to open the documentary trailer before delving into why it’s bullshit to always be positive, as per the doctrines of other self-help material.
“It’d be a hell of a lot easier if I could just hit you with six easy steps to life success. But to really get into this stuff, you gotta feel it.”
“I guess I’m gonna have to dig up some old, painful shit.”
To date, The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach To Living A Good Life has sold over 15 million copies since publishing back in 2016 thanks to its dumbed-down philosophy, R-rated language, and supposedly “refreshing” contrarian stance, which is broken down into nine chapters:
- Don’t Try
- Happiness Is A Problem
- You Are Not Special
- The Value of Suffering
- You Are Always Choosing
- You Are Wrong About Everything (But So Am I)
- Failure Is The Way Forward
- The Importance of Saying Now
- And Then You Die

The official documentary description is as follows:
The book struck a chord with readers all over the world and now, its no-bullshit, life-changing advice comes to the screen. Backed by both academic research and scatological jokes, The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck emphasises that improving your life hinges not on your ability to turn lemons into lemonade but on learning to stomach lemons.
Filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humour, this movie is a much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk to remind us that there are only so many things we can give a fuck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter.
The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck movie nonchalantly enters theatres on January 4th of 2023 before hitting streaming/VOD platforms a few days later on January 9th of 2023 – check out the trailer above.
