The question of when we’d finally catch a glimpse of Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love & Thunder has been answered today with a brand new trailer.
While there’d been something of a soft reveal thanks to leaked merchandise images, the footage previewed is the real deal. Shaved head, prosthetic enhancements, menacing dialogue… the whole shebang. As to be expected from a thespian of Mr Bale’s calibre, this hasn’t been half-assed in the slightest.
For those of you who haven’t kept up to date with all things Thor, the DC alumni officially crossed over to Marvel roughly two years ago when he was cast as the fourth franchise instalment’s major villain. In the original source material, Gorr the God Butcher is an alien who – through familial tragedy after familial tragedy – develops a hatred for cosmic deities. And based on what we’ve seen so far, Christian Bale’s portrayal holds a grudge of biblical proportions.

Ordinarily, a sneak peek of this alone would be more than enough to stoke the fires of anticipation, carrying the fandom towards a theatrical release date (July 7th of 2022, in this case). Determined to spark a bonfire reaction, however, Marvel Studios has seen fit to serve up a visual elaboration of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster / The Mighty Thor plus a front-facing shot of Russell Crowe as Zeus — the latter of whom strips Chris Hemsworth naked during the trailer’s end tag. Enjoy the body dysmorphia, fellas.
Thor: Love & Thunder has been co-written by Taika Waititi and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, and – as previously mentioned – directed by the former. The film has been produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and fellow company veteran Brad Winderbaum.
