Despite some less than stellar critical reviews, Venom was a box office smash, making over US$855 million globally since its release last year. With that kind of money going into the studio’s pockets, a sequel was inevitable, and it’s been confirmed over the weekend that Tom Hardy will be returning as Eddie Brock for Venom 2.
Speaking with Fandango, the film’s producer Amy Pascal said, “I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can.”
“When you think of Venom, you’ll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters. And once you saw Tom Hardy do this character, that’s all you needed to know.”
Hardy’s return isn’t overly surprising news, with the Mad Max and Peaky Blinders star confirming he had signed a three-film deal to star as Venom in an interview he conducted with Total Film Magazine (via ComicBookMovie).
In the article, Hardy also admitted he wasn’t really aware of Venom, saying; “I didn’t really read comic books, so my information was limited. But I was given loads of comics when I got involved. All the comics! And more importantly, I had my son as my guide. I was versed in the way of Venom by a 10-year-old. I consulted the oracle, there. And he would steer me on.”
As well as confirming Hardy’s return, Pascal hinted at a possible Venom/Spiderman team up by saying, “Everybody would love to see that. You never know someday… it might happen.”
Venom 2 is slated for release on October 2nd, 2020.
