When The Beatles dropped ‘The Long & Winding Road,’ we had no idea they were actually referring to the long-awaited Top Gun sequel’s three-year journey to release (eat your heart out, No Time To Die). Thankfully, we’re over the hump. And based on the fact there’s now an epic final trailer to get your freak juices flowing, it would appear Top Gun: Maverick has finally been cleared for takeoff.
The latest preview offers a better look at Miles Teller as pilot trainee Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of the late RIO Nick “Goose” Bradshaw; in addition to introducing this franchise instalment’s answer to the Maverick-Ice Man rivalry with Glen Powell as hotshot flyboy who goes by the callsign of “Hangman.” Let’s just say, even before considering all the complexities of being instructed by your deceased father’s best friend/the man who you hold responsible for your father’s death, emotions – and adrenaline + testosterone levels – will run high.

As for the rest of the final trailer, well, it’s nothing we haven’t really seen before in the earlier Top Gun: Maverick promo materials. Tom Cruise has returned as the iconic Pete “Maverick” Mitchell – now with the shiny rank of Captain – and certain individuals within the Navy aren’t too thrilled about it, particularly Jon Hamm’s Vice Admiral Cyclone. High-flying aerobatics are on the cards. Jennifer Connelly is Jennifer Connelly. In short, we’re in for a good time.
Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, and Glen Powell will be joined by Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Monica Barbaro, Manny Jacinto, as well as Lewis Pullman. In the director’s chair, you’ll find Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) working with a screenplay penned by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), Peter Craig (The Hunger Games), Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), plus longtime Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie – also known as the bloke behind the two most recent Mission: Impossible films, the next two Mission: Impossible films, and Edge of Tomorrow.
Top Gun: Maverick has a revised release date of May 26th here in Australia – check out the final trailer above and plot synopsis below.
