Reviews be damned. Tron: Legacy was a bloody good time and a bloody impressive visual spectacle. Now, over a decade since the sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) wowed millions in theatres, Disney finally has the stones to give the people what they’ve been clamouring for with Tron 3.
The production was sidetracked on numerous occasions due to circumstances beyond the immediate franchise’s control. According to the sequel’s leading man Garrett Hedlund, the box office failure of Tomorrowland circa 2015 was reason enough to scrap the trilogy-completer. But the fans held out hope, and two years later, Kosinski stated the project was simply in “cryogenic freeze.”
Which pretty much brings us to present day.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, the long-awaited Tron 3 (currently titled Tron: Ares) will star none other than the frustratingly method Jared Leto – who has apparently been championing this since 2017 – as the titular Ares; a brand new character with ostensibly zero connection to Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn and Hedlund’s Sam Flynn aside from the virtual reality arena.
The screenplay has been penned by Sam Wigutow, a scribe known for It Runs In The Family, The Prince, as well as the upcoming remake of The Crow. Frequent Disney collaborator Joachim Ronning, director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Marco Polo, is in talks to helm Tron 3.
Fingers crossed this one makes enough money to warrant a follow-up.
