The charms of John Mayer is something which few can fully explain but most will have encountered. As we’ve long-maintained, the charismatic songbird has long proven himself to be a viable candidate for his own unscripted show, perhaps in a Bourdain-esque travel format or simply an elaboration to his iconic Hodinkee interview. The power brokers of entertainment, on the other hand, have apparently chosen a slightly different path for him, as Variety reports John Mayer is currently nearing a deal to host a late night talk show based on the BBC’s Later… With Jools Holland for streaming service Paramount+.

Later… With John Mayer won’t exactly deviate too far from its British counterpart – barely at all, in fact – featuring performance segments that the host would ostensibly actively participate in, the usual talk show interviews with other musicians, artists, and cultural figures in a setting designed to resemble an after-hours club, as well as plenty of that signature Mayer banter (which is obviously the main drawcard).

The series would run as a weekly offering on Paramount+, alongside secondary plans to have “specials derived from the show’s performance segments” air periodically on the platform’s parent network, CBS. There are also discussions surrounding tie-ins with the Grammy Awards, which also airs on – you guessed it – CBS.

As monumental as this would be for John Mayer fans the world over and John Mayer himself, it wouldn’t exactly be a a first for the seven-time Grammy winner. The man served as one of several relieving hosts for The Late Late Show during the transitional period between Craig Ferguson and James Corden back in 2015; if only he chose to stay instead of giving the latter a global foothold. On a similar note, when the pandemic kicked off in earnest, Mayer also started an Instagram Live talk show to keep the masses entertained.

Whatever comes of these negotiations, one thing is for certain: John Mayer’s eight studio album is on the way. Having confirmed the next instalment of his discography has been recorded, mixed, and mastered via TikTok, there’s comfort in knowing a consolation prize is locked and loaded.
