Pop sensation Bruno Mars and multi-instrumentalist Anderson .Paak have spent the past three years cooking up a collaboration for the ages – ‘Silk Sonic’.
The duo’s upcoming album An Evening with Silk Sonic was teased this past weekend with the release of its lead single and their first collaborative track, ‘Leave The Door Open.’
Listeners of either artists will realise this partnership has finally cracked the funk equation fans could only dream of, a natural product of touring together since 2017.
This lead single is so blissfully complex – 35 chords and 16 turnarounds in just 4 minutes and 2 seconds – it’s clearly the result of two musicians flexing for each other through a rapport that translates over the airwaves.
An Evening with Silk Sonic is hosted and threaded together by funk all-timer Bootsy Collins, who once fraternised with the likes of James Brown and Parliament to become an icon of the 1970s funk scene.
“We can’t do shows right now,” said .Paak in a conversation with Zane Lowe and Apple Music.
“So we created a show within the studio. It’s always showtime with us, we can’t help it.”
The “setlist of doom” has been written and produced specifically with the absence of live gigs in mind. When the boys realised they couldn’t perform in person for some time, they created an album that takes their energy into people’s living rooms and headphones instead.
You can watch the infectiously sensual single above (and with a wardrobe as heated as theirs, I’d recommend you do), which you can run on repeat until An Evening with Silk Sonic drops in the coming months.
