Despite them breaking up in 2021, it seems we aren’t done with Daft Punk. One-half of the iconic duo, Thomas Bangalter, has announced a new solo album that’ll arrive in early April. Titled Mythologies, the project will be Bangalter’s second solo work after 2003’s underrated Outrage, which scored Gasper Noe’s incredibly divisive Irreversible.
The difference here is that Mythologies will be a 90-minute compositional work. Notable because this is the first time a member of Daft Punk has ditched the duo’s signature electronica for a full orchestral work.
We’re hoping it hits just as hard, though. As one of the creative forces behind timeless tracks such as ‘Da Funk,’ ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,’ and ‘One More Time,’ which was recently sampled by Drake & 21 Savage on Her Loss, there’s very little doubt Bangalter will give us one of the year’s best releases.
The independent orchestral work is based on a ballet of the same name, which Bangalter was originally commissioned to provide the soundtrack for by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. As reported by Pitchfork production was premiered by the Opera National de Bordeaux in 2022, so Bangalter’s music is already familiar to some.
In a press release, Bangalter said the album is best thought of as a ‘large-scale traditional force of a symphony’ channeling the history of orchestral ballet music.
Mythologies will be released on April 9 via Erato/Warner Classics.
