From Operation Odessa to Don’t F**k With Cats, some of the greatest crime documentaries involve a high-stakes story, and the stakes arguably don’t get much higher than Apple TV+‘s Cowboy Cartel.
Cowboy Cartel follows the unbelievably true story of an “unlikely hero” in Scott Lawson — a rookie FBI agent hailing from rural Tennessee who’s tasked with investigating Los Zetas leaders the Treviño brothers. For background, the Los Zetas were founded by US-trained deserters of the Mexican special forces, and at one stage, counted itself among Mexico’s most powerful (and violent) cartels.

As per the official description: “While the Treviños terrorised thousands in their pursuit of power, money and influence, Lawson risked his life on a hunch: tracking the brothers’ racehorse transactions in the United States, infiltrating the deadly cartel, and uncovering their international money laundering operations.”
This four-part examination features first-time interviews with Lawson himself and IRS agent Steve Pennington; Irving police officers Steve Junker, Brian Schutt, and Kim Williams; Assistant United States Attorney Doug Gardner; Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Ginger Thompson.
Joe Tone, the author of Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream (which covered this strange chapter of organised crime history), makes an on-camera appearance in addition to serving as a production consultant.
The series has been executive produced by American Cartel‘s Dan Johnstone, Steve Michaels, and Jodie Flynn, alongside Castor Fernandez (The All-American Cuban Comet, Brothers in Exile); and ex-Narcos producer Eric Newman, who had a hand in Netflix‘s other hit cartel drama series Griselda starring Sofia Vegara. Johnstone and Fernandez have also directed the series
