To fill the Ted Lasso-sized hole in our hearts, Apple TV+ has been pumping out major football-related content lately, including this brand-new documentary series about Lionel Messi’s World Cup victory (which now has a full-length trailer).
Aptly titled Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, this four-part affair features exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the Argentinian superstar, eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient, and recent Inter Miami signee.

Just days before the 2022 edition of the tournament kicked off in Qatar, Messi told the filmmakers: “It would be the ultimate experience to win a World Cup and to be able to close out my career in that way.
“I’ve daydreamed about it after many years of fighting for it. I made a million possibilities of what could happen… the first match, the Round of 16, the quarterfinals, the semi-final, and the final.”
“I’m also going to live it as something special, because it’s the last one. To finish my last year winning a World Cup would be the dream ending.”
All in all, it promises to be both an intimate and unprecedented retrospective of the GOAT’s illustrious career.
Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend has been executive produced by the Emmy Award-winning Tim Pastore (Free Solo, Jane); Emmy and Tony winners Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody; yet another Emmy winner in SMUGGLER Entertainment’s Matt Renner (Free Solo, Limitless with Chris Hemsworth); alongside Jon Henion (Welcome to Wrexham) and Juan Camilo Cruz (In Her Hands).
The entire series has been produced for Apple by SMUGGLER Entertainment in association with Pegsa.

It also marks Apple TV+’s second docuseries centred on Lionel Messi after Messi Meets America, which dropped back in October.
Messi Meets America focused more on his transition from Europe’s prestigious La Liga and Ligue 1 to America’s developing Major League Soccer (and it now streaming in its entirety).
As for Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, the forthcoming series is scheduled to premiere on February 21st, 2024 — check out the full-length trailer above.
