True Detective fans are getting their wish granted with an amusing twist as Apple TV+ enlists both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for its brand-new series created by David West Read (The Big Door Prize, Schitt’s Creek).
As per Variety, the real-life friends are set to portray versions of themselves in this untitled half-hour comedy format, which will span 10 episodes to begin with.
The concept basically entails “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson” which is tested when their respective families attempt to live together on McConaughey’s Texas ranch. Take our bloody money.
Skydance Television has signed on to make this one happen with Read, Harrelson, and McConaughey as executive producers alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell representing the former, along with Bill Bost and Jeremy Plager. Further casting details and release date to be announced.

Prior to HBO’s genre-defining debut season of True Detective – and outside of their offscreen bromance which saw the duo take a “friendship tour” to Dubrovnik last year to celebrate Harrelson’s birthday (see: above) – the two veterans of the dramatic arts have collaborated on a number of occasions, including Surfer Dude, EDtv, and Welcome To Hollywood. Of course, McConaughey may soon have his commitment plate piled high depending on whether Kevin Costner chooses to depart from Dutton Ranch.
As some of you may recall, a bombshell of a revelation was dropped last month regarding Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. According to multiple publications, Costner has been a rather uncooperative franchise lead with recurring scheduling conflicts. The silver lining? A potential spin-off property fronted by Matty M.
“They are plotting a potential franchise extension to continue the Dutton saga, a new show with Matthew McConaughey in talks to star,” reported Peter White of Deadline.
“It is unclear which of the Yellowstone cast will move over to the McConaughey-led series, but it is expected to include several of the big stars.”
Stay tuned for key updates on both the forthcoming Apple TV+ comedy series and the potential Yellowstone spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey.
