- Blue Mountain State season 4 is happening at Amazon Prime Video, reports Deadline.
- Alan Ritchson (Reacher), who portrays Kevin “Thad” Castle, has signed on to return as both series star and executive producer.
- The cult comedy series’ original three-season run on Spike lasted from 2010 to late 2011; and was followed by a 2016 feature-length film dubbed Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland.
The Sopranos creator David Chase might believe the “golden age” of television is officially over, but between The White Lotus season 3, and the news that Blue Mountain State season 4 is now just inches away from rolling cameras… we think there’s a new gilded era of serialised entertainment on the horizon.
Around this time last year, reports indicated a follow-up to the All-American hilarity was being shopped between Amazon and the ubiquitous Netflix. Both of which had their own reasons to nab the sequel.

Amazon MGM Studios is where Blue Mountain State star Alan Ritchson has a first-look deal and headlines Prime Video’s immensely popular Reacher (meaning it’d behove them to keep their golden goose happy); while Netflix is where the existing episodes of Blue Mountain State stream internationally (and have since found a second life as a major cult hit).
According to Deadline, Amazon won the battle shortly thereafter, and has since fast-tracked development to its final stages with an official greenlight decision expected “within a month or two.”
“We’re actually setting it up with Amazon,” said Ritchson – who’s set to executive produce and reprise his role as Mountain Goats team captain and linebacker Kevin “Thad” Castle – during a press conference at the Daytona 500.
“We are going to make a fourth season happen; I’m trying to work it into my schedule. Honestly, I think it’s going to be the best season of BMS we’ve ever had. It is so damn funny, and it’s perfect, the way we resurrect the characters and bring them into the way that things are now.”
Ritchson’s co-leads Darin Brookes and Chris Romano – the latter of whom co-created the series with Eric Falconer – are also expected to reprise their roles as laconic/low-effort quarterback Alex Moran and schlubby team mascot Sammy Cacciatore, respectively.

As we’ve outlined on a previous occasion, at face value, Blue Mountain State seems like nothing more than dumb frat bro fodder: think Animal House, Van Wilder, and American Pie meets Friday Night Lights with a hint of Ted Lasso. And don’t get me wrong – a good chunk of the storylines/punchlines involve the holy trinity of campus life (sex, drugs, partying).
But stick around a little longer and it reveals Community-esque levels of writing with genuinely laugh-out-loud comedy; a healthy balance of both low and high brow that your run-of-the-mill movie buff will get a proper kick out of.
Keep an eye out here for updates on Blue Mountain State season 4.
