Lionel Messi has been in the news a lot over the last couple of years, be it for signing with Inter Miami, moving into a luxe South Florida mansion, or getting his very own Apple TV+ show. His stock has never been higher after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and if you wanted even more Messi in your life, Netflix has just released the first trailer for its own show about the tournament, Captains of the World.

All told, we can expect a six-part docuseries that has been produced by Fulwell 73 in close partnership with FIFA+, following the captains of several key countries in last year’s World Cup. With all-new behind-the-scenes footage of the tournament, these captains include the likes of Lionel Messi (obviously), Cristiano Ronaldo (it might be a tough watch for CR7 fans), Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Simon Kjær.

“This is a World Cup, and it’s really tough,” says Messi. “We’re going to fight.”

Considering that Messi’s jersey was sold out everywhere after the World Cup, with a final that produced some of the most emotional live commentary you’ll ever hear, we can only hope Netflix hits this one out of the park. Captains of the World will premiere on Netflix on December 30, so check out the full trailer above.
