Bethesda’s internationally acclaimed video game franchise is getting a live-action adaptation. And soon, we may all be raving about the Fallout TV series.
With the backing of Amazon Studios and HBO’s Westworld creators signed on as showrunners – Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy – this is on track to be an epic affair befitting of the source material’s reputation… potentially even a worthy contender against similar adaptations of beloved video game franchises, such as Netflix’s The Witcher and HBO’s The Last of Us.
“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” says Joy and Nolan via press statement.
“Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”
“Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring Fallout to the screen,” says Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios.
“But it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa a few years ago, that they and the team at Kilter were the ones to do it right. We’re enormous fans of their work and couldn’t be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios.”
The Fallout story is centred on a post-apocalyptic world caused by a seismic nuclear conflict between the US and China circa alternate WWII. Fast forward to the mid-21st century, resources are a scarcity, civilisation as we know it has collapsed, and there are now threats at all side in the form of countless factions as well as countless mutated species. As for the Fallout TV series, it’s currently unclear what the first season will focus on. But let’s just say, there’s plenty of lore to work with.
More to come.
