Earlier yesterday, reporting from US entertainment news outlet Variety indicated HBO is now in the “very early stages” of producing yet another Game of Thrones prequel – this time centering on the Targaryen conquest of Westeros.
Set some 128 years before the events of House of The Dragon, the latest addition to HBO’s sprawling GoT-themed universe is yet to find a writer or showrunner. In spite of this, according to reporting by Variety, studio execs are “keen to move forward” with plans for a feature film, in addition to the proposed TV series – bringing the total number of Game of Thrones projects now on the boil to 7.
That does not include any of the animated prequels – which HBO Max has ostensibly been eyeing since 2021.

In any event, shoving aside questions of real-world feasibility, the narrative thrust of Aegon’s Conquest sounds like a lot like it would work for prestige TV. The series would follow Aegon The Conqueror, and his sibling-spouses Visenya and Rhaenys, as they prosecute their invasion of Westeros: culminating in the foundation of the Targaryen Dynasty and creation of the Iron Throne.
Like House of the Dragon, the events of the Conquest are painted in only broad detail: as part of an account given by GoT creator George R.R. Martin in his fictional history, Fire & Blood. This would give prospective showrunners a good deal of narrative freedom when developing the various arcs in the first season; though a number of film & television writers have slammed the premise for its apparent lack of “interpersonal drama and politicking that [these] shows are best at”.
