With seven novels in the seminal fantasy book series, a Harry Potter TV series would be a massive undertaking and the ambitious next step for J.K. Rowling’s expansive Wizarding World. Yet it seems that’s exactly what may be happening as the long-rumoured project inches closer to reality as HBO Max seeks to strike a deal with Rowling, who maintains creative control over her work.

According to Deadline, Warners Bros is currently in talks with Rowling to come on board for the project and serve as series producer. Such a deal would then require a screenwriter but after one is found it’s highly likely we’ll finally be seeing Harry Potter expressed through prestige TV. Undoubtedly, HBO has the chops to handle such an ambitious undertaking and with Warner Bros Television on the production side of things, this has the potential to be one of the biggest TV shows in recent memory.

Bloomberg originally reported on the rumours with a general idea that each season of the Harry Potter TV series will focus on just one book in the Harry Potter book series. If all goes to plan, that’s seven seasons of opening up the Wizarding World in a way that wasn’t before possible with the feature film format.

Rumours have been swirling around about a Harry Potter TV series for a few years now but not until now have talks been this advanced. Earlier this year, we reported that Warners Bros. was seriously considering the show but we didn’t know about it being an HBO Max Original and J.K. Rowling’s involvement back then. Although it makes sense with the recent Harry Potter video game, Hogwarts Legacy, going on to become one of the most successful games of the year so far, both critically and commercially.

The appetite for Harry Potter IP is certainly still going strong. However, as IGN reports, this is still very much a wait-and-see situation. Warner Bros. is “nowhere near a deal” for the project and with Rowling’s involvement, there is bound to be some thick water to wade through before HBO Max officially confirms the Harry Potter TV show.
