A 7 season order has been officially placed for a Harry Potter TV series that will run for a decade according to Warners Bros. Discovery, who this week announced the project for its new streaming service with HBO Max, simply titled Max.

A press event held by Warners Bros. and HBO revealed the new streaming service along with plans to amalgamate both HBO Max and Warners Bros. Discovery+ into one massive platform. The Harry Potter TV series will assumedly be an exclusive “Max Original” to help boost Max’s appeal in a market that’s only starting to become more competitive as Netflix declines in popularity while Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ muscle up to the top.

A new cast will come on board for the adaptation, which will lift all seven of J.K. Rowling’s original books with each season dedicated to one book. Details are obviously scant right now so we don’t know the first thing about the prospective cast, or even the crew. All we know right now is that J.K. Rowling will be among the show’s executive producers.

“Each season will be authentic to the original books,” said Warner Bros. Discovery in an official announcement.

In the same announcement, J.K. Rowling said that whatever plans are in place were satisfactory enough to get the author on board.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaption which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” said Rowling.

Considering the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy, a new video game based on the Wizarding World, the appetite is clearly still there for more Harry Potter content. Something like this was inevitable but it’s still great to hear that Warner Bros. has put up a long-term commitment to getting this long-rumoured TV series off the ground, dangling it as a very tempting carrot to help Max take on the current establishments in the streaming world.

We also know that Max will also feature a TV series based on The Conjuring cinematic universe and the fourth season of True Detective. Having those two in the bank as well as such an ambitious Harry Potter series leaves little doubt as to whether or not Max will be a success when it launches on May 23, 2023.
