  • HBO has gifted the world with a seven-second sneak peek of the forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
  • Set 90 years before the flagship series (and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire), it stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (the titular hedge knight) & Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen V.
  • The teaser arrives as GoT‘s first spin-off — House of the Dragon — wraps up its sophomore instalment.

While Game of Thrones fans are still reeling from the open-ended House of the Dragon season 2 finale, HBO has decided to preview the cinematic universe’s next spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — alongside the likes of The Last of Us season 2, The White Lotus season 3Industry season 3, and plenty more.

Showcased in the latest ‘Coming In Max’ sizzle reel, the seven seconds of footage may not betray a whole lot to the uninitiated, but those familiar with the events of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas (and the lore alluded to beyond) will certainly find cause for excited. And hopefully, it’ll prove more satisfying than the recent House of the Dragon episodes, which many have deemed inconsistent at best.

As per the official synopsis:

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

For additional context, the exploits of “Dunk & Egg” weave through notable moments in Westerosi history such as the Blackfyre Rebellions. Minor spoilers: when Ansell’s “Aegon the Unlikely” eventually ascends to the Iron Throne as reigning monarch, Claffey’s Ser Duncan would make a name for himself as a legendary Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

The cast also features Finn Bennett as Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen — Egg’s older brother; Bertie Carvel as Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen — heir to the Iron Throne and Hand of the King to Daeron II; Tanzyn Crawford as Dornish puppeteer Tanselle; Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon — heir to Storm’s End; plus Sam Spruell as Prince of Summerhall Maekar Targaryen (Aerion and Egg’s father).

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

Of course, as you may have heard, this isn’t the only Game of Thrones-related property currently in development. Aside from House of the Dragon season 3, you can also expect:

  • 10,000 Ships (AKA Nymeria) centred on the founder of Dorne Princess Nymeria with showrunner Amanda Segel,
  • 9 Voyages (AKA The Sea Snake) centred on Lord Corlys Velaryson steered by showrunner Bruno Heller,
  • Another spin-off exploring Aegon’s conquest,
  • as well as the Golden Empire animated series centred on Yi Ti (a fabled kingdom loosely based on Imperial China).

HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2025.
