Anyone who stuck it out until the bitter end with HBOโs Game of Thrones is understandably wary about the coming slate of spin-off properties. Reports of a failed $42 million pilot certainly havenโt done the franchiseโs reputation any favours, either. Thankfully, the first reactions for House of the Dragon are positive. Extremely positive.
Not only is the coming prequel series starring Paddy Considine, Emma DโArcy, and Matt Smith already being hailed as a โworthy successorโ to Game of Thrones, but better than the original adaptation of George R.R. Martinโs A Song of Ice & Fire, and โ for some reason โ Breaking Bad. Who doesnโt love a good redemption arc?

Set 300 years before the events of the main series, the story will depict House Targaryen in their glory days, as well as the Targaryen civil war that set sibling against sibling, dragon against dragon; eventually immortalised as โThe Dance of the Dragonsโ in George R.R. Martinโs fictional history/universe.
Co-creators George R.R. Martin & Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules) have served as showrunners alongside Miguel Sapochnik; the latter of whom is a franchise veteran who has most notably directed the epic Season 6 Episode 9 instalment of the original series, more commonly known as โBattle of the Bastards.โ Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi has also returned.
Over in the US, House of the Dragon is set to premiere via HBO and HBO Max on August 21st. Here in Australia, you can expect is to stream later this month on Binge and Foxtel Now starting from August 22nd.
