As much as we like to give Hollywood s**t about the lack of originality and nostalgia-baiting these days, you’ve got to admit… sometimes they’re just easy wins (a la Top Gun: Maverick). Now granted, comparing the Tom Cruise-led franchise with Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop series would be like comparing apples to F/A-18 fighter jets. But the first trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F gives us hope that there’s still some magic left in the old bottle.
Coming soon to Netflix (because where else, really?), the long-awaited fourth instalment of the Axel Foley story arrives 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop III screened. This time around, Murphy’s street-smart detective from Detroit, Michigan returns to investigate corruption within the Beverly Hills Police Department, which threatens the life of criminal defence attorney and daughter Jane (Taylour Paige).

Reuniting with his old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), as well as teaming up with a brand new partner/Jane’s ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), they set forth to “turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.”
Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot also reprise their respective roles as Detective Jeffrey Friedman, Axel’s partner in the Detroit Police Department, and Serge, a former art gallery salesman turned weapons dealer. Kevin Bacon, on the other hand, joins the Beverly Hills Cop universe as Captain Grant.
The screenplay has been accomplished by Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Aquaman), Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), and Kevin Etten (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent); while the direction has been handled by Australia’s own Mark Molloy, who replaced Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) and Adil El Arbi & Bilal Fallah (Bad Boys For Life).
