- The long-rumoured scripted expansion of Netflix’s Squid Game is reportedly being helmed by David Fincher (note: not a remake).
- Insiders note the legendary director will likely dedicate his time to it in 2025.
- This would mark the first scripted follow-up of the flagship series, and the second addition after the Squid Game: The Challenge competition series.
Ahead of Squid Game season 2’s imminent arrival, Deadline has indicated David Fincher is eyeing an English-language Squid Games series for his next project.
The celebrated director of Seven, Fight Club, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl fame has maintained a fruitful collaborative relationship with Netflix — dating all the way back to its first major original hit in House of Cards.

Since then, he’s gifted both Netflix and the world with everything from cult favourite Mindhunter, Love, Death, & Robots, as well as Mank and The Killer starring Michael Fassbender; the latter two entries produced under his exclusivity deal with the streamer.
The narrative scope of David Fincher’s addition to the growing Squid Game universe is currently being kept under wraps. But suffice it to say, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker is uniquely suited for this job.
Aside from his proven record in adapting (and elevating) source materials for the screen, many of which we’ve listed above, the tonal and thematic aspects of the smash hit South Korean thriller fit nicely in his bleak and social commentary-laden wheelhouse.
Outside of this, Squid Game season 2 is scheduled to premiere on December 26th, 2024 with an early renewal for a third and final instalment. As per the official synopsis:
“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

“Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either,” series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote in a letter.
“The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with season 3, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.”
“We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”
