Boom-Shakalaka: A Netflix Docuseries About The NBA Is Coming Soon

— 11 January 2024

People have long compared the NBA to a soap opera. It’s a wildly popular sports league that’s built on the star power of its athletes, complete with melodrama and plotlines to invest in. For this reason, after successfully tackling Formula 1 (Drive To Survive), tennis (Break Point), golf (Full Swing), cycling (Unchained), and American football (Quarterback), the NBA made perfect sense as a candidate for the next Netflix docuseries.

Similar to the structure of the aforementioned shows listed, Netflix will focus on five popular NBA players on different teams and at different stages in their careers.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the streaming service will follow LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers), Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics), Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), as well as Domantas Sabonis (Sacramento Kings).

This selection of players will offer a pretty complete look at the life of an NBA star. Whether you’re one of the sport’s greatest players ever in a big market like Los Angeles, or an upcoming star making a name in Minnesota on a franchise that’s never won before, Netflix is prepared to show it all.

Last year, we learned that the producers behind ESPN’s The Last Dance were filming LeBron James and the Lakers during the season. It’s unclear if this is connected to the forthcoming Netflix NBA docuseries, but we know that the all-time scoring king will more than likely have a 10-part series of his own one day.

Until then, James has agreed to participate in this highly bingeable examination of professional basketball with his SpringHill Company set to produce. Other production companies involved in the NBA project include Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions — which was a part of Netflix’s Quarterback docuseries — and President Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.

There is currently no official title nor release date for the NBA docuseries coming to Netflix. Be sure to keep an eye out here for key updates.
