  • Netflix further bolsters its unscripted sports content by reuniting with Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal for a documentary series.
  • “The series will include unprecedented access throughout his comeback to competitive play in the 2024 season after sitting out much of 2023 due to injury,” notes the streamer.
  • Nadal called time on his illustrious career last October with the following under his belt: 22 Grand Slam titles (14 from the French Open alone), 209 weeks as world No. 1, and two Olympic gold medals.

While his absence will certainly be felt in the 2025 ATP Tour, Rafael Nadal will grace our screens in the upcoming Netflix docuseries about his final season as a professional tennis great.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Zach Heinzerling (Stolen Youth, Cutie and the Boxer, McCartney 3, 2, 1), it’ll serve as a retrospective of the Big Three player’s legendary career — complete with unprecedented access; never-before-seen footage from Nadal’s own personal archive; and interviews from his inner circle — culminating in his retirement at the 2024 Davis Cup.

“I never thought I’d do something like this, but I got a call from [Skydance CEO] David Ellison and with his words together with an amazing project they put in front of my eyes, it really convinced me this was the right thing to do,” The King of Clay himself explained via statement.

“Everyone will be able to see how my life has been during my tennis career and particularly in this vey last year I had. It will also show how my life and my tennis career developed through the years.”

Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of Content (Spain, Portugal, the Nordics), added: “Rafael Nadal stands as one of the most influential and greatest figures in the history of sports. We are excited to present his remarkable story to our members, offering an intimate glimpse into his journey to cement his legacy to become the legend he is today.”

This comes in the wake of a similar feature-length documentary effort following Rafael Nadal’s chief rival (and close friend) Roger Federer, which is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Netflix Drive To Survive Formula 1 2

This also represents a wider effort to cement Netflix’s status as a premiere destination for sports content — in addition to its growing stable of unscripted content ranging from Formula 1: Drive To Survive (the one that started it all) and Quarterback to Full Swing and Break Point, the streamer recently live broadcasted the infamous Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight; as well as a pair of NFL matches during Boxing Day.

Last year, Nadal even faced off against rising superstar and compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in the streaming giant’s inaugural tennis exhibition, dubbed the “Netflix Slam.”
