If films like Parasite is what you crave, Spanish filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia has the sci-fi driven answer for you in The Platform (AKA El Hoyo).
After seeing a successful debut at Toronto’s International Film Festival (TIFF) followed by a juicy Netflix deal, The Platform has finally received an official trailer and release date just in time for the WFH binge.
Set in a dystopic tower-like prison, The Platform focuses on the unique way inmates are fed. An eponymous platform filled with food descends from the top towards the bottom, each level taking as much food as they want.
It goes without saying that this system leaves nothing but scraps for those down below. Think of it as a visual representation of trickle-down economics. And from there, the events of the film begins with your typical hero who sets out to change the status quo.
The Platform stars Iván Massagué as Goreng, Zorion Eguileor as Trimagasi, and Antonia San Juan as Imoguiri. It drops on Netflix this weekend – and maybe it’ll be a nice transition into the rest of the quarantine period as you struggle to get a roll of toilet paper.
