- The Diplomat is set to return to streaming later this October.
- Series regulars Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell are now joined by Academy Award winner Allison Janney.
Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming second season of The Diplomat. While the teaser for the critically acclaimed political drama is light on plotting, it features two major revelations (and some mild spoilers for Season 1).
We see US ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) arriving at an unknown shindig, arm-in-arm with her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), having seemingly survived the car bomb cliffhanger that closed out the first season. The trailer also gives streamers their first look at the oft-mentioned but yet-to-be-seen US Vice President Grace Penn, played by Academy Award winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya).

Here’s the full synopsis for The Diplomat Season 2 from Netflix:
“A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters US Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Keri Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the UK didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).”
Created by Debora Cahn, whose previous credits include Homeland, Grey’s Anatomy and The West Wing, the first season of The Diplomat aired in April 2023.
Russell’s performance as Kate has been critically acclaimed across the board, scoring her multiple award nominations, including the Golden Globe for ‘Best Actress Television Series’ (Drama) and Emmy for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’.
She won Best Actress in a Streaming Series (Drama) at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. The show itself received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series (Drama).
The Diplomat Season 2 hits Netflix on Thursday, October 31st – check out the teaser trailer above.
